Short answer
Tip = bill × tip percentage. On $100 at 18%, the tip is $18 and the total is $118.
Try it with your own numbers in the free tip calculator — no sign-up, in English and French. Enter the bill, choose a percentage, and split it between people if needed.
Worked example
- Bill: $100
- Tip percentage: 18%
- Tip: $100 × 0.18 = $18
- Total: $100 + $18 = $118
- Split between 2 people: $9 tip per person, $59 total per person
If the bill is different, the same formula applies. A $60 bill at 20% gives a $12 tip and a $72 total.
What is a normal tip?
- 15% — standard for good table service
- 18% — common, and often the default suggested amount
- 20% — generous, for very good service
- Less than 15% — usually only if the service was poor, and it is worth saying why
Takeout, counter service and delivery have different customs, and tipping is not expected everywhere. When in doubt, ask what the house practice is, or check whether a service charge is already included on the bill.
